A punk rocker falls for a girl not interested in sex or drugs and must make an effort to change.

Summary:

What happens when a guy with massive amounts of heavy metal music knowledge and a history of getting drunk and partying with his friends happens to fall head over heels for the quintessential “good girl”? That is exactly the premise in Krovatin’s novel Heavy Metal and You. How far would you go to impress the girl you "love"? Would you be willing to change your clothes and you attitude?

Sam is a good student, who knows a lot of about classical literature and is incredibly smart, he also loves heavy metal music and will often show up for class wearing a spiked collar. When he falls for the “straight-edge” girl Melissa who doesn’t drink, do drugs, or tends to like the people who do, it is up to Sam to “straighten” up.

Written by Krovatin in his late teens, this book is teeming with teenage angst. This book captures the essence of a guy’s book, perfect for the reluctant reader or the rock music fan. The characters are well developed and have a realness that is uncommon in many young adult novels. Readers will easily recognize aspects of themselves or people they know within the pages.

Summary:
Nelson provides a fluffy but humorous exploration into the lives of three friends, Chloe an art geek with a admiration for Sylvia Plath, Laura the popular girl with the athletic football star boyfriend that she sleeps with more out of routine than affection and Jace the tomboy with the crush on the newly transfer star athlete with a secret of his own. Having grown apart through out their high school careers into separate and very different cliques, the three friends decide to make prom an evening to remember.

Teens will love this light and fluffy novel about the trials of high school and the idea that sometime friends grow up, and grow apart but that if they look hard enough they will remember the reasons they became friends. Throughout the novel each character is forced to deal with individual issues, and through that they learn that their friendship is still strong and that they can always depend on each other. In the process emerges quite a pleasurable read. An enjoyable book especially designed for the chick-lit generation. Some sexuality is discussed though out the book as well as some references to drug usage. However, this is hardly an edgy novel, and will fit in with most YA readers.

Allee Rosen is a teen girl who focuses on her more on education and less on her social life is thrust into a world completely new, when she is discovered by a model scout.

Summary
Allee Rosen is a high school senior with one thing on her mind, Yale University. That is until her father explains that a minor miscalculation in the college fund is about to destroy everything she has worked so hard for. While at the mall to support her sister (affectionately named “The Fluff”) own modeling aspirations, Allee is accidentally discovered by a modeling agency. Now she is given the choice, either go back to business as usual; finishing up high school and working at the local Wal-Mart, and accept one of the dreaded local colleges or spend the next six months in Miami trying to be the model she never thought she was. In an attempt to earn enough money to pay for the college of her dreams, She chooses the later.

Allee’s adventure in modeling is a fun journey filled with strange vocabulary and surreal surroundings that sound almost imaginary to the casual reader. Fans of America's Next Top Model will be enthralled, especially once she becomes the next “it” girl. As the story comes to a close Allee is then forced to choose, continue modeling and head to Japan for the next six months or go to Yale.

The story tends to drag once Allee begins her modeling career her common sense is lost once she enters the modeling world which makes for predictable resolutions. Teens will love the fantastical storyline and unforgettable situations, however, combined with one dimensional characters such as the “friend” who is really the conniving back-stabber, the mean girl with a heart of gold, makes this novel unable to completely fulfill its potential.

Still Teens will be strutting down the runway when the finish this book, looking for more on the subject.

After a giant wave sweeps his island village away, Mau my attempt to survival with the rituals that have been instilled in him.

Summary:
Pratchett tells the story of Mau a boy on the verge of manhood, who must travel an island alone and return to his home village in order to achieve the much desired rank of becoming a man. It is during this trial that a tidal wave crashes on his island and the surrounding ones causing death and destruction. Forcing Mau to abandon his trial and return to his home, which has also been ravaged. It is here that he must attempt to rebuild his home and routine all the while battling the voices of his ancestral Gods, and the miscommunications of the other survivors, including the young “proper” woman Daphne. As the “tribe” becomes larger and larger, Mau is forced to take more of the responsibilities of that of a leader.

Pratchett allows readers the ability to examine how life may be different if they were ever forced to survive with only their wits and minimal training. This is a much more difficult adventure than anything ever on survivor.
Mau and his tribe must adapt to not only the major changes such as survival but the every day ones as well, such as language difficulties, and birth issues, in a far more humorous manner than one would expect.

Readers of Pratchett's other works may be disappointed that this novel is not part of his Discworld series. Even though, this novel shares many similar aspects and may not be as much of a shock to his die hard fans.

Jesse uses his sketchbook and comic strips to make sense of his home in Harlem and the loss of a close friendship. And so Jesse fills his sketchbook with drawings and portraits of his blood brother, Rise, and his comic strip, Spodi Roti and Wise, as he makes sense of the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and loss in a neighborhood where drive-bys, vicious gangs, and abusive cops are everyday realities.

Summary
In this novel that is perhaps too real, we are introduced to Jesse, and his blood brother Rise. Through the actions of both boys; the cautious and careful Jesse and the more risk taking and dangerous Rise, we are able to explore the quintessential Harlem lifestyle and all the stuff that comes with it. As we are introduced to the story, the setting is a funeral for both boys. We are led to examine and discover what actions led to this tragic event.

Jesse who has always looked up to Rise who was only two years older has now begun to notice distance between him and his blood brother who has begun hanging out with the local gang and selling drugs. As Jesse is pushed further and further away he begins to explore sides of himself that have long been dormant. Perhaps the most interesting side is his artistic ability. Through his art he is able to express himself and create a world in which he and Rise are still the friends he longs for.

This gritty novel is real and rough. Teens will love the tempo and feel of the novel as well as the underlying story which is more about expression than an actual plot. Perfect for those reluctant readers who prefer a more realistic novel.
